Scripture:
“For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.”
—1 Timothy 4:8
Devotional
We live in a world obsessed with optimization.
Optimize your body.
Optimize your schedule.
Optimize your productivity.
And while those things aren’t bad, Paul is clear that bodily exercise does profit, he reminds us that its value is limited. Physical strength fades. Energy runs out. Even the healthiest bodies are temporary.
But godliness?
That’s a different kind of investment.
Godliness shapes how we think, how we respond, how we lead, and how we love. It trains our hearts to trust God when outcomes are uncertain and to obey Him even when it costs us something. Unlike physical training, godliness carries a return both now and forever.
When we pursue godliness
Our decisions gain clarity
Our peace becomes anchored
Our lives begin to reflect eternal purpose
Godliness doesn’t just prepare us for heaven—it transforms how we live on earth. It affects our families, our work, our leadership, and the way we walk through pressure and uncertainty.
Paul’s encouragement is simple but profound: don’t neglect your spiritual training. Make time for what strengthens your soul. What you invest in spiritually today will produce fruit far beyond what you can see right now.
Challenge for Today
Take 10 intentional minutes today to train your spirit.
Before checking email, social media, or starting your day:
Read this verse again slowly
Ask God where you’ve been prioritizing the temporary over the eternal
Choose one small act of obedience or surrender today
It won’t look dramatic, but it will be impactful. Godliness is built in quiet, consistent moments.
Prayer
Lord, help me to value what You value.
Teach me to train my heart, not just my habits.
As I grow in godliness, let my life reflect Your presence, Your peace, and Your purpose, today and for eternity.
Amen.
