Daily Devotional: Losing to Truly Live
In Mark 8:35, Jesus speaks a truth that challenges everything our world values. We are taught to protect our lives, secure our future, and hold tightly to control. Yet Jesus turns this thinking upside down, teaching that real life is not found in self-preservation, but in surrender. This daily devotional explores what it means to lose our lives for Christ’s sake, and how that surrender leads to true freedom, deeper faith, and lasting purpose in Him.
Scripture:
“For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it.”
— Mark 8:35 (NKJV)
Reflection
Jesus speaks a truth that runs completely against our natural instincts. Everything in us wants to protect, preserve, and control our lives—to hold tightly to comfort, plans, reputation, and security. Yet Jesus tells us that clinging to our lives actually leads to loss.
What does it mean to “lose” our life for His sake? It doesn’t mean abandoning responsibility or purpose. It means surrendering ownership. It means choosing obedience over control, faith over fear, and God’s will over our own agendas.
When we insist on writing our own story, we limit what God can do through us. But when we lay our lives down, our ambitions, our timelines, our need for certainty, we discover a deeper, fuller life than we could ever create on our own.
Jesus is not calling us to less life. He is calling us to true life, one anchored in eternity, purpose, and freedom found only in Him.
Application
Consider today:
Where am I trying to “save” my life by staying comfortable or in control?
What might God be inviting me to surrender so I can fully follow Him?
True life begins when we trust God more than we trust ourselves.
Challenge for Today
Identify one area where you’ve been holding back from fully surrendering—your plans, your future, a relationship, or a fear.
Offer it to God in prayer and choose obedience, even if it feels uncomfortable.
Prayer
Lord, I want the life You promise, not the one I try to protect on my own. Help me release control and trust You fully. Teach me what it means to follow You with an open heart and surrendered life. I lay myself down so that I may truly live. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
