Today’s Scripture

“A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”
— Proverbs 15:1

Reflection

Our words have power.

A single sentence can bring comfort, encouragement, and peace—or it can create hurt, anger, and division. When emotions are high, our first instinct may be to respond quickly and defend ourselves. But Scripture reminds us that wisdom is often found in choosing a softer response.

A soft answer doesn’t mean ignoring difficult situations or avoiding truth. It means choosing to communicate with patience, kindness, and self-control.

Jesus calls us to be people who bring light into difficult moments. Sometimes that begins with simply pausing before we speak.

Before responding today, ask yourself: “Will my words bring peace, or will they add fuel to the fire?”

That simple pause can change the direction of a conversation.

Application

Today, be intentional about the words you speak.

When you find yourself becoming frustrated or angry, pause before responding. Take a breath. Listen carefully. Ask God for wisdom, and then choose words that encourage rather than tear down.

Look for an opportunity today to speak life into someone who may be struggling. A simple word of encouragement could make a greater difference than you realize.

Remember: You don’t always have to win the argument. Sometimes the greater victory is choosing peace.

Prayer

Lord,

Give me wisdom in the words I speak today. Help me pause before responding when emotions are high and choose words that bring peace instead of conflict.

Teach me to listen carefully, speak with kindness, and respond with patience. Keep me from saying things I may later regret, and let my words encourage, strengthen, and build up the people around me.

May everything I say reflect Your love and grace. Help me be slow to anger and quick to listen, especially when conversations become difficult.

Guide my words today so that they bring peace, hope, and encouragement to those around me.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Challenge for Today

Pause before you respond.

The next time you feel frustrated, offended, or angry today, take a moment to stop and pray before speaking.

Ask God:

“Lord, help me choose words that bring peace.”

Then let your response reflect His love and grace.
